College Social Web 'Chatter' On the Lookout

If you are a senior in high school, I can advice you to be careful of what pictures, comments, or posts, you put up from Friday night's party. Colleges now have a new way of getting to know their students. Using the TargetX CRM Tool, admission offices can now track what comments you leave on twitter or Facebook. Is this really creepy? It might be. But researchers have found that by looking at a person's written posts, we can also find out what is going through their brains, since thoughts are what make up our goals and interests. It also offers easy access to respond in a matter of seconds to student questions or concerns. So next time you are at your computer, uploading pictures from last friday night. Don't forget, everything that goes online, stays online.

  1. I think it is interesting that most of the blog posts, including this one, saw the article as a "creepy" way that colleges are looking at students. The article seems to stress the positives of colleges using social networking sites to better "brand" and promote their schools. It seems to me that they are not just looking to judge student behavior, but to understand what students are saying about them so that they can better target their marketing efforts.

  2. "Big Brother is watching you" and it doesn't just start when you are a senior. Admissions officers want to know all about you and using what you do on Social Media gives them some ideas of what you are all about. Parents and teachers must start when children start using Social Media and explain how the use of it could affect the rest of their lives in terms of getting admitted to schools and landing a job. What you put out on the Internet stays there.
